While in Goa, you can mainly see the Indian blended Western Portuguese flavour, which the westerners feel somewhat like at home. Altogether two different India flavours can be experienced in two immediate neighbourhood of Goa - one stretch is from Goa to south ward to Bangalore and the other from Goa to its east ward to Mumbai. Both the cities, Bangalore and Mumbai are about equivi-distant from Goa in different directions - about 12 hours journey by Road or about one hour flying. Both side journey of about 3-4 days each can be a good introductory visit of different experience or people, places and things. Depending upon your interests, again both the cities offer further extentions of marvel and beauty travel and tour experience.

As mentioned, travel to these major cities can be undertaken by road, rail and air and all the three modes of transport have variety of different budget options. The cost of stay could be marginally higher in both the cities when compared to your Goa stay, again with plentiful options.

There's a town called Gokarna which is just south of Goa, I think it would probably take a couple of hours on a bus (v. cheap). It's a lovely place with great beaches and a few nice temples, and a nice traveller vibe. When I was there, I stayed in a guesthouse on Om Beach (sorry can't remember the name, but it's the first one you come to if you walk there), It was nice and pretty cheap. We also stayed on another beach called half moon beach, at the time it had no electricity or running water and was very much back to basics, but it was great and the people and food were fantastic. Also stayed in the town itself, I think it was called Om Sri Nalaya (or similar) - also pretty cheap (100rs a night) and basic but run by a very nice family.
