That depends if by western you mean country western then the difference is that country western dance is a form of dance usually a line dance done to country western music. Modern dance is a free style interpretive dance that can be done to any music. However if by western dance you are refering to western vs. eastern dance then the difference is that western dance is a blanket term that is meant to include traditional and more modern dance styles from Europe and the USA (Including Ballet, hip, hop, tap, jaz, modern, Irish, etc...). Modern would be a subset of western dance. Dances that would not be included in western dance would be Middle Eastern (Bellydance, Debke, Shamdan, Khaleegi, Zar, Shikaat, etc...), India (Bhangara, Rajistani, bollywood, etc...), Asian, African, and Polynesian. There are more but I'm really just trying to give you a basic idea of the differences. One thing that often sets "western" dances apart from, for example, Bellydance is that western dances tend to focus on the placement and movement of limbs and feet. Think of ballet and being on pointe, there are specific feet positions and arm postitions, think of Irish dancing which is very heavily focused on the feet, or the waltz agin focusing on specific placement or steps. Bellydance however focus on muscle isolation in the torso midriff and hips. Bellydance does have some degree of focus on the hips and certain steps but the main focus is elsewhere. Many other forms like African, Polynesian, and Indian have other focuses as well.
