Dan is correct... Sounds like he is with the fire dept.

I my industry, I look for trace hydrocarbons to pin point fuel spills... You can find spills that are decades old. Hydrocarbons are also the "bad stuff" in the fuel vapors that are attributed to o-zone damage.

He is also correct about the accelerants that don't leave trace evidence..... I haven't given it much thought, but I'm gonna side with him on not posting that info.

Hydrocarbon accerants used in arson always leave traces of the original chemical after the fire has been extinguished. Even very hot fires. Many humans can smell the residue and all dogs can. There a few accelerants that do not leave a trace, But I'm not at liberty to divulge them.
