Well, I wonder if you are making any distinction between Italian men and Italian-American men? In any case, Italian-American men at their best are good husbands, family-oriented (whatever kind of traditional or non-traditional family that may be), and tend to be alpha males. They are sexy as hell, and are the original Latin lovers--remember that the original Latins came from the region (state) of Latium, where we find the cities of Roma and Latina. In general, men with Italian blood are handsome devils. On the negative side, they tend to be too macho and chauvanistic, and incapable of dealing with their inner feminine side. They can be egotitstical, infantile, and unrefined. We see this on tv and in the cinema (think Sopranos), where it is hard to find a decent, in-shape Italian-American male. Here in the NY metropolitan area, one finds lots of eye-candy in Italian neighborhoods. One wonders, then, why the entertainment industry doesn't cast these hotties in roles that would portray Italian-Americans in a positive, and more beautiful, light. The men in Italy tend to have impeccable taste in food and fashion and are generally warmer emotionally. On the negative side, we find the "mammone," or mamma's boy. Guys don't move out of the house until they get married (nor do gals), so the mother has many more years of parenting than her American counterparts. This is particularly problematic for gay Italians, who don't have the choice of marriage (yet!) and are not usually "out." So, if you are dating a guy or gal who is not out and still living at home, you have a lot of dodging to do for too many years (something that Americans wouldn't tolerate). The link to the family, then, is still strong -- even though family size has gotten much smaller in the past decade or so (one child per family).
