If you are using Windows XP, it is not going to show any significant improvement. People do it because they are so used to it and they feel comfortable. Windows XP Professional Training Kit Page 10-60.
If you plan to defragment, it depends on your usage. If you are installing and deleting a lot of programs all the time, once a month otherwise once every six months or once a year. I have had my PC for 5 years and have never done it and it runs just fine.

It depends on you. Most of the time, it makes no visible difference to the access-time. The time is in milliseconds/nanoseconds. You really won't know. But yeah, if you're that persistent, once in a month or two should be fine. But be warned, it might take up a whole day if you have a large hard disk and many drives.

I use Diskeeper with the smart schedule option. of course this only works well if you leave your computer on all the time. It seems to defragment every other day on my system disk.

you don't have to very often, even if it's faged up, getting rid of stuff that you don't need and cleaning out junk before you defrag will make the most diff.

Once a week is fine. If you're still having problems with a "slow computer" you'll need to take other measures which i'd be happy to help you with. Hit me up if you need at dumbbutt4321@yahoo.com Thanks, Larry

Use a program called Disk Keeper Lite (DKlite) it will let you know when you need it.
Works great, and it's FREE
