It might depend on which religion your looking at but the basic idea among Abrahamic religions is that wealth should be distrubited to the needy so if someone is starving and can get food in no other way but to steal it then it is not a sin because he has not been given the help he needs to earn the bread on his own. Besides that it's also a very good thing to save lives in these religions so if his family is starving and he steals to feed them so they can live he has in part saved their lives and therefor does not sin. This does not mean that if he is caught he will be let go with no punishment since you still should not steal but the penelty might be lessened if it is proved that he is to poor to buy food for his family.

If we are talking a society with a iron clad cast system which condemns people to death through starvation then no.
If the boy has a chance to work to earn the money for the food or if there is help available that is not used then, yes it is a sin to steal food.

May be not. If there is no other go. It is said that beg, barrow or steal, steal if you have, if only it is a last resort. No correct difinition of sin is given. It depends on various things like circumstances, persons and thier reletive positions. But how many times can one steal without getting detected and punished even to satisify a justifiable cause like satisfing one's family's hunger? He has to find some other means soonest.

It's not a matter of who steals in judging if it is a sin or not. Stealing is a sin, period
For the one who has been stolen from it doesn't matter who stole, he's still lost something.
If one has really no choice but to steal in order to avoid starvation, he might not care that he sins, but that doesn't make stealing a noble thing.

It a crime to the mechant he steals it from.

It is a heroic act to his family and other poeple with no bread.

Its a sin only to the well fed clergy

Remember the song, "Stealing Bread From the Mouth Of Decadence.?"

Letting your family starve is a sin. It would take extreme circumstances, but I can imagine situations where this would seem moral.
