I'm sick of three way bulbs that partially burn out, and would like to change my lamps so I can use 100 watt fluorescent or incandescent bulbs. I know how to remove and replace the switch but I don't know if it will work, though I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't; can you?

the switch itself is the only thing that controls any differences so yes a normal lamp kit will do the job for you.

It is simpler than that. Just put a normal light bulb in the table lamp. It will work fine. As you go through the 4 positions of the switch (normally off, and 3 light levels) with a normal bulb you will have 2 positions that are off and 2 that are on.
