Bush wants to cancel out SSI altogether and what will you do for your SSI if you don`t get it before they run out of funds especially paying into it all of these years? I know alot of you say you have a kellogg plan and etc. but alot of companies thought they were safe and then found out there was no retirement money for them at retiring age...

You're thinking of SSR, not SSI, which is for persons with disabilities, but have not accumulated any or enough SSD benefits.

As for what you're asking about, the problem is mostly a causal affect of the changes in the makeup of our society. When I was young, there was 11 workers for each person retiring. As we are living longer, and with middle and upper income choosing not to have as many children, or no children, compared to generations in the past, there are less contributing to the fund.

Social Security never was set up for people to receive back what they had paid in. The fist recipients didn't pay anything in. Retirement age was set more than 15 years past what was consider the average life span of the time, figuring that most possible receivers would die before retirement.

A lot has changed in the last hundred years. The Spanish flu killed off primarily the young and healthy, not the old, so they ones who survived were stronger, taller, and healthier. More American soldiers died of it on the ships crossing the Atlantic than all those killed during WWI. Now, those people are still alive and kicking, with only 13% having significant health problems. In terms of evolution, that are a new breed of human. Perhaps we need to push back the age of retirement to pass the current average life span.

I'd recommend filling out that paperwork Bush doens't want people knowing about.. stop paying into Social Security and take the money you would have stuck into social security into a savings account, bonds maybe, or if your the gambling type stocks.

Check into it, thought it's not easy to find. You don't have to pay into social security, it's volentary. It's not a "Tax" like other taxes.. it's just put with the whole tax system so it can be "easy for you to use."

They don't force you to pay social security (even though it feels like it)... but if you don't pay, then your not eligible for "social security benifits".

I'm just saying, if you think their is no benifit... then why pay? (When you don't have to!)

SSI is welfare. my hubby works for the social security. why would you want that when you get old? Don't you want to take care of yourself when you are that age and live on your savings instead?
I know I do. I have been saving for my retirement for nine years. I am 30 now. Be smart. Don't expect anything from anybody, especially not the government. Be self-sufficient.

I am retired now and don't have social security. They put limits on how much you can earn and if that isn't insane, I believe our country is perfect because of the GWB administration.
