I've had trouble sleeping lately so i take pills sometimes to help me sleep. Lots of depressing thoughts flood my mind over the next few hours/days. Is this a normal side-effect?

"Normal" or not, if taking those pills negatively affect your emotional well-being then you should not take them. There are different ways to alter your ability to sleep...perhaps a different type of medication would provide you with the rest you need without that side effect...talk to your doctor. (And don't just ask him/her about a pill you see on tv...that's what the advertisers want you to do.) Tell him/her your problem and ask for suggestions.

You should also consider that trouble sleeping might not be the problem, but mearly a symptom of something else. Treating a symptom may relive it temporarily, but it won't address the underlying problem. (For example...the pills might not be causing the depression, but rather Depression could be causing you to have trouble sleeping and the pills somehow bring your unconscious emotions to your attention.)

Good luck.

You really should go see your doctor to make sure everything is ok. I know my mother in law became addicted to sleeping pills(over the counter) and had a hard time getting off of them. And my aunt had prescription sleeping pills and I swear they became like a gateway drug for her. When they stopped working for her she started trying to get stronger drugs to put her to sleep and I think trying to get some sort of high from it. She does suffer from alcoholism so she does have a tendency to abuse medicine. Don't get me started on her and Benedryl(sp). Just be careful and don't use the sleeping pills unless absolutely necessary and if so use in moderation because I think they can be habit forming. Good Luck.I hope you find the answers you seek. P.S.CALL A DOC A.S.A.P. :)

I took Ambien for severe insomnia. However, sometimes I would not fall asleep immediately. I would wake up the next morning, and have had whole conversations with people online and not remember a thing. I actually drove on Ambien once. Sleeping pills can be very dangerous. I suggest you immediately consult your doctor

Try benadryl. It makes you drowsy, but doesn't have the same harsh side effects. Plus, if you get allergies in your sleep, or in the morning, it helps with that also!
