I think that originally it was because the colonial english viewed the native peoples as barbaric, lesser humans. The native american's had no concept of owning land and so they had no problem selling their land because they thought they were getting a good deal since who could possibly own the land! After having purchased the land the Colonists definately felt that it belonged to them. Much as when you purchase anything (for example your own home) you feel it belongs to you. After having had family ties back hundreds of years you tend to think very strongly that it is yours. Also, anyonewho was born here and who grew up here is likely to feel that this is their home and that it belongs in some way to them in that capacity. As a "white person" of mixed heritage (including being part native american, cherokee in fact) I feel that this country belongs to me because it's where I have grown up. It holds all of my past and most of my present and future. It belongs to me because I bought a home that I pay for every month, because I plant my garden in my back yard. This country belongs to me because I work the land and work for it, because my family has been here a long time in some ways but only a short time in other ways. However I don't feel that it can't belong to anybody else! It belongs to anyone who is willing to work hard for america's ideals and make this their home. It belongs to the immigrants who seek to make a better life, to the native americans who seek to preserve their ancient ways, it belongs to everyone here.

I am part American Indian and yes it did belong to them at one time BUT THEY LOST. Be it fair or not. The mexicans also lost and at least mexicans can claim their own country as mexico. Indians have nothing. Don't compare the two because mexico has always had plenty of resources but still insists on a corrupt government and depriving it's people. Not the USA's problem.
