Out of the four original members, only one has died, the great Jim Morrison who died in Paris, France July 3, 1971. The remaining members are Robby Krieger (guitar), John Densmore (drums), and Ray (keyboard/organ/bass, with his left hand). Ray has a band now called Riders on the Storm with The Cult's Ian who is a look a like/act alike/sound alike Jim. The band was originally called The Doors of the 21st Century but they had some legal problems with that.
After Jim's death (death certificate says heart attack but its very much debated), the band released 2 more unsuccessful albums and then finally broke up.
Next year is the 40th anniversary of the Doors and they will be releasing awesome box sets along with virtual ones and a documentary is said to come out with an interview with Jim's parents dated December 2005!!! Some books are due out too. If you want to read up on the doors I recommend "The Lizard King" by Jerry Hopkins or "Angels Dance and Angels Die" by Patricia Butler. Ray also came out with a book back in (I think) 1997 called "Light My Fire" (I believe his last name is spelled Manzarek) that I thought wasn't too bad and John Densmore has one called "Riders on the Storm" that I haven't read but haven't heard good things about either. John and Jim didn't get along too well. The Doors movie by Oliver Stone is good but like many of Stone's movies, isn't too factual and is more fiction based on fact.
Contact me somehow if you want more information about them or recommendations, I'm full of it.
