Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. When a healthy baby dies in her/his sleep suddenly for no reason that can be determined by medical history or autopsy. It is *not* a suffocation death--that is a known cause, although the two are often confused by parents, doctors, and even medical examiners.
There is no way to prevent SIDS. However, there are risk factors that can be eliminated to lower the chances of your baby dying. These include exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months (no bottles, pacifiers, solids, etc.), not smoking (or allowing a smoker in your home or near your baby), always placing baby on her/his back to sleep (preferably in the parents' bed), and not allowing baby to get overheated during sleep. Often added to this list are safety measures to prevent suffocation such as putting nothing into bed with the baby and using a tight-fitting mattress, but again, this is *different* from SIDS.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, this is an unknown condtion that affects 5% of newborns, there are some conditions which make a baby more susceptible, including socio economic class, soft bedding, low birth weight and being placed on the stomach or side. Though it has flipped back and forth between the back and the stomach, the current consensus is that being on the back is the most safe position. It is important to have the firmest mattress possible for your newborn and not to use many soft blankets.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
a condition where some newborns to one year olds suddenly die in their sleep.
Avoid SIDS by placing babies on their backs at night and put them to sleep in their cribs...do not share beds with infants.
