I pay little attention to points. The real reward is making a difference in someone's life or day, or just make them think or smile. Follow the trail of excellent questions and answers and their friends and you will appreciate Yahoo!Answers more. Remember, birds of a feather...

Yahoo is slowly adding benefits as the average number of points per person increases. At the beginning of the month I was a level two, and I am still a level two, but now I have the added benefit of being about to rate questions and answers. This change in activity was not due to myself, but instead to yahoo as they add benefits. They are just a little slow to do so is all. Be patient. Your hard work is not for naught.

I reckon you get just the reward of engagement with other human beings. And the interest of seeing a good answer (such as one that doesn't rely on God or his acolyte Dogma). And the satisfaction of feeling you've helped someone (and the ego-boost) when you score a best answer. So it's fun, and I suppose we all only spend the time on it that we think the pleasure is worth. That's a fair exchange, without prizes.

They simply signify that you have wasted a great deal of time thinking you know so much you can answer others people's questions with some semblence of intelligence.
Like Willy Wonka said "You get nothing!"
Note that I am cracking level 3 soon-------

In the link you could see the rewards Yahoo gives you for answering and making points.
Besides, won't you find rewarding gaining more knowledge and the recognition that some of your answers might be considered as "Best Answers"?

when you get enough points, you get to ask/answer more questions per day. also, i think that when you get to the highest level, you get a chance to join the bavarian illuminati, or something.
