Our fascination with comic superheroes is time-tested. Why do we continue to relate to them?

Because we are caught up in a story...and we want answers.

Comics tell stories to which we relate. People have always been drawn to stories...from Job, to Homer, to Jesus' parables...stories are a powerful way of teaching and for people to relate.

Super heroes? Because as CS Lewis said, we were not created for this world. We hate evil, and want to see it fought. We want something bigger than us to exist, yet we want it to relate to us as humans. We also want to see purpose in people's lives, and camraderie as people fight together.

Comic super heroes point out people's innate need for the God of the Bible. Pascal said every person has a "God-shaped vacuum" in their hearts. Super heroes are an attempt to fill it.

Don't get me wrong, I love comic books and super heroes, but don't ignore the message their popularity teaches.

Another reason for our facination with comic superheroes is the concept that we are looking for a higher power. It's the same idea of all the mythological gods and goddesses; superheroes are the modern-day versions. Superman Returns is an excellent example.

I don't.
I can't explain why not, though it might be partly that I didn't grow up with comics. I like recent comics more, the ones where superheroes are more like "characters with superpowers", not larger than life, and especially tongue-in-cheek comics like Freshmen and Ultra.

No matter how good one's life is, we are always looking for betterment, and the super-heroes represent that ideal, for heroes of any sort is one thing the world will always look for and look up to.
