well your motherboard is the sole question.
some are too old to handle too much.
i'd say you might be able to though if you couldnt, you could try 256mb.
make sure to get the right kind as well, and depending on how old that type is, you'll have to buy it online.

yes - find out the configuration of your current ram - DDR, PC3200, etc - and the speed that your system needs. You can find replacement memory at almost any computer hardware retailer. Sometimes, instead of having to replace the RAM chip, you can just add on, using additional memory chips. That means you won't have to throw the old chip away. Just make sure that you are careful when opening the case and handling the chip - static electricity is a killer to the innards of PCs.

Depends on what type of RAM you're using. Assuming you're using the older SDRAM, then get a 512MB SDRAM (they're usually more expensive than 256MB SDRAM, even 2nd hand). Most likely your motherboard can take it. My guess is 2 piece of 256MB SDRAM is very much cheaper than a single piece 512MB SDRAM. Hell, I got several 256MB pieces lying around on my office desk.
Of course, you can't replace a 128MB SDRAM with the newer RAMs you find in the latest computer.
So, basically, you need to find out what type of RAM you're using.

Yes, you can upgrade the RAM on your PC but before upgrading just find out some parameter (1) your motherboard will support or not. (2) Which RAM is using and which RAM are you going to installed in PC, Eg. DIMM, DDR, SDRAM, SODIMM other.
