granted the poetry i post on here is literally thrown together just for shock value, it seems to me like no one can grasp any absract concepts. it's like if you dont come flat out and say something no one gets it. has anyone ever heard of salvador dali? surrealism? abstraction? these are all age old techniques but it seems like these paraquats cant put together random imagery in a manner that would invoke the intention of the artist. if i string a bunch of random thoughts together then i am trying to stirr up a wave of emotions radther than just say something plain and simple. what happened to thinking outside the box? am i the only one who's mind works like a stream on consciousness where my heavily emotional thoughts come in semi-related images and experiences that dont connect together directly outside of the emotion involved? have you ever almost died? were the thoughts going through your mind at the time rational and linear? why are art and emotion so repressed in our society?

of course random thoughts arent artistic just because they are random. that is like are for the sake of being artsy which is lame. im not saying the stuff i post here is good because it is not, however when someone is critiquing it all they say is "it's random" or "its just a bunch of jibber jabber" that is not a good critique. if you are gauging artistic value gauge artistic value dont asses the continuity. is that too hard for you to understand mr smiley face guy?

i think we live in an age of information and noise innundation. people don't pick up a book or listen to music without words that isnt recommended by some pop magazine. its truly sad, as it means that we have generations who don't know how to cultivate tools for understanding, like empathy, or how to navigate their own imaginations without it being spoon fed to them by some corporation. i think art as we have known it is dead as we have become such a subjective culture that people now only want to see things they made (myspace, youtube, etc), the me generation raised the generation of choice who can choose premade elements and have programs to magnify narcissim and to take all of the short cuts. pain and frustration have always been crucial to great art, the current societies ideals have been sanitized by technology, so we lose the great accidents, invention by necessity instead of for profit.

There's nothing quite like not being part of the pack. I feel your pain. Keep expressing yourself. Why do you care if anyone gets you or not if you really are sincere? Stream of consciousness is an amazing tool to form a bridge between here and Heaven. Yes, I have been "almost dead" 3 times. I long to be dead again. The peace and satisfaction in those few moments were worth my entire life. Where is your poetry? I want to know.
Most gifted persons' creations are way before their time and not a human on earth recognizes nor rewards their efforts. Beethoven, Rumi, Picasso, etc, all lived in extreme poverty with no overt accolades for their efforts during their lives. However, they completely changed the direction of the arts they practiced. When you are asking if anyone has artisitic knowledge these days, just look around you. What I see is a gaggle of narcissitic creatures imitating who they think are "IT" for the day. What a sad bunch of imitators. Creativity and originality have gone by the wayside it is true. But, that is no reason for you to discontinue your pursuit of expression. Do you really want a bunch of lame, uneducated idiots to proclaim you are the ONE? Well, of course you do. I feel for you - keep expressing yourself and know that that stream of consciousness is something that not everyone is fortunate or gifted enough to experience. It really does mean something.
In answer to your last question I really don't think art and emotion are repressed in our society, not like in other societies anyway. Mostly, I think artists lack the courage to express something other than what they think will sell. Courage, dedication and perserverence is the cue and this is stream of consciousness writing with a message I received just for you.

We have under gone a shift towards technology. There is some gadget that does almost everything for you these days. There is more advertising for things to make you lazy/sedentary than active. Don't fret we still have the free thinkers. The spoken word cafes, poetry readings, online poetry contests, inventors, random street artist, new music coming out daily. Not too many appreciate traditional art forms in the younger or middle generations. Feel free to start a new renaissance. Peace.

AMEN! people have become flat these days. no one has dimension anymore! dali is awesome, i love his work. the only things people today worry about are fast food and 'i ate a pea today...do these jeans make me look fat??' sometimes i wish more people would read books and study art and study the mind... i hate superficiality. people need some depth! i'm tired of ditzy, stupid people who think they are cute by not knowing anything. i thought i was alone in this leftover world. i find my 'stream of consciousness/free association' active alot. i love to think. don't die on me now, whoever is still out there with some substance...

what about the distinction between art and stream of consciousness? Just because you string a bunch of random thoughts together doesn't immediately add significance to them. the art is in the precision of abstraction.

No, youre not. And I believe it is because the United States is suffering from having too much. Why are these things related? Well Id have to explain years of trying to think about this problem myself, so Id rather not do it on yahoo answers.

The basic lack of knowledge comes from the fact that when schools have budget cuts, guess what gets thrown out first? You guessed it, the arts, music programs, art exhibits, etc., etc. Sad but true. I really wish they'd throw out Algebra, that to me is the most useless subject that is required! I encourage people to be creative. Maybe that's what we need to do, start our own writing groups, art appreciation groups, etc.?
