Hi there,

This is a common problem in Win98...

In win98 DISPLAY, you cannot set any colours until you have
chosen the MONITOR and Video card correctly. You must have
the Video card driver correct, first. Then you boot to find the
monitor. If Win98 does not find the monitor on its list, it may
prevent you from getting out of Default VGA, 16 colours. Also,
with some video/monitor combinations, you CANNOT make more
than one change at one time, so that if you change the resolution
and the number of colours, and then click APPLY, you will get
nothing... Change the resolution first. APPLY, and then, depending on whether or not you must reboot ( the settings
can be changed to one of 3 options, with REBOOT as one
of them ), then, change the colours...

You are in CONTROL PANEL, Display, and looking at the
first TAB page.... you have to click on ADVANCED, and look
at the MONITOR and the ADAPTER settings, before you try
to change any resolution of colour...

As to your question - is this a harddrive problem - no, just a
Display, Advanced problem...

Add information if you try the Advanced settings, and still cannot
get the resolution you want... Check in CONTROL PANEL,
SYSTEM , Device Manager, and see what DISPLAY adapters
are listed. The device should match the the brief, first Display of
the adapter card log on when you first boot you computer, if
you can see it at all. If you are not certain , you may have to
open the case and hope the name of the adapter card is clearly
written in white sccreen print, or that you can see the video
chip by removing the heastsink/ fan assembly - some chips
have the heatsink GLUED on, and cannot be removed.

Let us know how how successful the help is...

good luck
