I usually begin with the square that holds the most numbers already pre inserted...from there, I determine which number(s) have not been used both the line down and the line across from which ever number I choose first in the square to complete... I complete this almost completed square first and then go to the next square with the most pre inserted numbers, looking down and across the rows to determine again what numbers have been used and inserting numbers that complete the square...on you go until the last square. If at this time you run into two numbers within the same line...you have an easier time then of rearranging a few numbers in other squares to successfully complete the entire puzzle.
Good luck...I'm sure others will have useful ideas as well and you will locate something that works best for you.

There are many techniques, some of them pretty straightforward and others real complicated with names like swordfish, jellyfish, xwing and so on.
Most newspaper published sudokus can be solved with the basic 7 strategies. This is a good web site to explain them as well as the more complex ones.

You could also download some software to generate new sudokus and help you to learn how to solve them at
