If it is a single handle faucet, be sure to turn the water off first. If you don't, the cartridge will shoot out of the faucet and spray water everywhere.

Pop the cap off of the top of the mechanism. It will reveal a screw that you loosen and it will permit you to remove the faucet handle and the surrounding plastic and/or metal pieces.

Looking down inside of the faucet stem you will see a little U shaped clip that has to be removed with a paperclip and a small screwdriver. Once the clip is removed you can then twist the stem out of the faucet.
