Dana:

There are two main reasons for the freezing; lack of air flow and/or lack of refrigerant. It is a good idea to try and find the cause; in case you get lucky, remedy the problem and save a service call.

Immediately turn the thermostat to the off position, and turn the fan to the on position. This will stop the compressor from cooling the refrigerant, and run warm air across your evaporator coil to melt the ice. Have towels or a tub under the air handler to catch the water as it melts to avoid a mini-flood.

First we need to look at possible air blockage. Is your filter loaded with debris? Washable filters can look clean and still block air.
I suspect your evaporator coil is plugged with dirt and/or mold. Can you look under the air handler through the filter rack and look at the underside of the coil? (It looks like a radiator) Check and see that there are no collapsed ducts on the return or supply side of the air handler that could obstruct air flow.

If your filter is clean, the coil is clean, and there are no obstructions in the ductwork, you are almost certainly low on refrigerant gas. If the coil is dirty, it should either be professionally cleaned, or the entire air handler replaced, depending on the age of the unit.

In any event, a qualified service tech should be able to make a quick diagnosis, and make some recommendations on the proper fix. Good luck and God bless you.

Air Handler Frozen

This happens a lot this time of year. Your system has been overlooked for a long time and then you expect it to keep up when the outside temperatures soar.

You do have your system serviced twice a year by some who knows what they are doing, don't you? If not, you should.

It could be the filters need replaced or cleaned depending on what type you have. Chances are if you know to describe your indoor unit as an air handler, then you should be up on what to do with your air filters.

This is a comfort product, if you want to be comfortable, you must keep the system running up to speed. Do you let the oil in your car go without changing?

The service company will charge you about $100 to come out an look everything over. This is money well spent.

What ever you do, don't call someone like "Uncle Billy Bob's A/C and lawn care."

CLEAN YOUR FILTER!!!!!! or change it. Turn the outside unit off and leave fan on inside. pull the filter out and clean it. or change it. run it without a filter about 30 min with indoor fan on only. see if that works. If not, call a technician.

it means that the filters need cleaning or the hose(where the water passes) is clogged
