Some women don't. Of those that do, I would suspect the answers are as varied (and in some cases similar) as to why men like to compete against each other, or women against other women.

Your question seems to assume women and men naturally have gender defined behavior patterns. Competition, like all other social skills, is learned behavior. As such, the rules for socially allowable competition is defined by individual cultures to reflect the mores and traditions of that culture. As differing cultures come into contact some of the ideas and behaviors of each may affect the other....which is sometimes resisted by traditionalist of said cultures.

Jealously is also a learned behavior. It is a fear of being losing power or position, a rivalry amongst competitors...in a traditionally male dominated sport a woman HAS no standing to lose. On the other hand, the men may feel they lose something to compete against a woman. (Of course you could say the sport itself represents something within the culture...for example national pride, and in such a case a woman might feel it is important to be allowed to compete to equalize the social power between the sexes.)

ha ha ha. My husband has never even been mountain climbing. But I have. Competition does not always stem from jealousy. My husband and I get competitive sometimes as a way of flirting. We laugh and have fun while competing. The only way I am jealous of my husband is that he gets to eat lunch alone with out 3 little kids vying for his attention. But I feel sorry that he has to work so hard for us too so it all evens out.

There is competition and there is also cooperation.
There is jealousy and there is also compassion.
There is estrangement and there is also coexistence.
Today they are aliens, tomorrow they become happy couples.
Today they are singles, tomorrow they are parents.
I don't think men and women are warriors on the opposing battle fields; but they are completing halves seeking like mad for each other from time immemorial until the end without end.

I think it's weird to compete against a man as a female. It should never be a "male/female" thing. If I wish to challenge someone, then I do it. I don't see the gender. For someone to make it a gender issue, to me bespeaks insecurity.

IMHO :D

Since we are all just human, why does it matter who competes against whom? We were all born, we will all die, we all poop. We look different on the outside, but we are all just made of tiny little atoms that just happen to be attracted to each other.
