I need it for work and for me to watch videos, listen to music and save my pictures. If possible, I also want to use it in playing games.

dell is best site 4 configuring
my best size would be 14.1" screen, just right
and if it's widescreen, even better
any bigger & it becomes un-portable !

checkout the inspirion e1405
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/entnb_e1405?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
now configure it
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=E1405S2&s=dhs
at $ 1000 , u should get a decent system
basic and low-end games ok ., no highend gaming
Intel® Core™ Proc Duo T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache)
Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
14.1" WXGA+ UltraSharp™ TFT Display with TrueLife™
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
80 GB Sata Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™ HD Software Edition

the dell xps range is even better, a premium range this

Processor - AMD Turion X2 TL-50 or Intel Core Duo T2300
HDD - 100GB 5400RPM
RAM - 1GB DDR2
Graphics - Card, at least ATI X1300 or better(so you can play games, try to stay away from "integrated graphics" or chipsets ie ATI Radeon Xpress 200 or 1100, not as good as a true video card)
Screen - up to you if you want widescreen and true brite and all that crap
Wireless- doesn't really matter, pretty much all the same
DVD/CD - 8x write dual or double layer

Alienware is a bit overpriced, Dells are good and cheaper, look for Acer at www.newegg.com. HP's aren't bad either

these days laptop comes similar to desktop configuration or even more powerful than desktop. So you need not worry about it capability and performance. Spending £800 or more can get better laptops.

No clue, but a good laptop would have the same power as a desktop PC
