I've been feeding my outdoor cat who recently became sick. I've been keeping him indoors at the moment and bought him a new food dish but the old one is still good. I was thinking of boiling it but how long should I do it.

Well, to purify stream water it must be boiled for 20 minutes to remove all the impurities and make it drinkable, so it would make sense to boil the dish for 20 minutes as well (that's a rolling boil for 20 minutes).

You don't say if it's a metal or a ceramic dish. If it's ceramic, you can just put it in the microwave for 3 minutes and that will kill all the germs. Or you can put it in your dishwasher (metal or ceramic) on the highest heat with a heat dry cycle and that will also take care of it.

(P.S. - You should also microwave or put in the dishwasher your kitchen rag or sponge on a daily basis to kill the bacteria.)

I just did baby bottles and pacifiers. It was 5-7 minutes. Do NOT go over 10 minutes, you can actually increase the toxins in the water if you boil it for too long.

it depends on the material, some things are more pores than others, if it is plastic you cant boil it too long or chemical will come out that are not good. If it is stainless steel boil the **** out of it, but just a good wash will real hot water should be just fine for most anything

Well I don't usually boil it I usually boil water in a tea kettle until it starts making that weird noise ( when it's ready) and then pour it over whatever I'm sanitizing. ( sometimes you should do this several times.

It depends on what altitude you're at, 5 mins at a hard boil for sea level. If you are at a higher altitude you'll have to boil them longer.
