Make friends with the people that live around you. If you are living in the dorms, keep your door propped open as much as possible. Pop your head into other rooms and just say hi to people.

If you enjoy going to parties, remember that some older students think it's funny to mess with Freshman. Go and have a good time, but limit any drinking you do. Any reputation you get in the first weeks will be there for the next year. And keep partying to a minimum--it's awful for your grades.

Study. Study hard. Prove yourself to be a serious student to all your professors from the beginning. And here's something no one ever mentioned to me: call every professor you meet "Dr. ___" until they correct you (since not all professors have their doctorates). It saves you from guessing, and any embarrassment later on.

Don't go home every weekend. The fun really happens on the weekends, whether it's going out, or just meeting new people.

Be nice to the people that live in the town full-time. I went to a small college in a small town. I made friends with both college students, and people who grew up in the town. Those were the friends I could call when I got lost, or recommend a great restaurant.

Be ready for diversity like you've never seen before. I worked on campus with a guy from Zimbabwe, a girl from Pakistan, and another girl from India. Learning about their cultures are what led me to my Master's program in ESL.

Be yourself.

Best advice I can give is learn TIME MANAGEMENT.

They actually tell you in freshman orientation (or at least they did at mine) to set aside 3 hours per EACH hour of class you're in. for example...if you're taking 13 credit hours.. 13 x 3 hours for study time = 39 hours of studying and being in class a week. That's like a full time job! It really doesn't leave much time for much else.
However, DO enjoy your college experience and have fun, party, socialize, just remember your priorities...and the 3 hour study time has been researched as the best way to keep your GPA high is to devote 3 hours a week to studying for that class. Like say, you're taking a biology class that's a 4 credit hour class..you should be studying a minimum of 12 hours a week just for that ONE class (that's if you're wanting an A in the class)

I'm going to be a freshman too, and I'm pretty nervous myself. The best advice I could give you (and me, lol) would be to just be yourselff and remember what's important to you, since you're going to be so far away from home without the safety net of your friends and parents. The people above me are right, don't listen to people who say they never study because they're probably flunking out of college. Do what it takes to make the grade, that's why you're going to college. Have fun and drink but don't be a dumb@$$ about it....there's no point in doing things you'll end up regretting because it will just lower your self-esteem. Also don't be like most people who sleep around in college, that stuff is nasty and you'll get STD's and a bad reputation. I'm staying with my boyfriend because I won't be going too far away from home, but even if I wasn't going to be with him I wouldn't sleep around with guys. Just remember to keep your values intact, and find lots of friends who you enjoy being around who will be supportive of your goals. Good luck!

be open minded cause you may have a room mate whos annoying and sucks...but try to be nice!!!

dont get too caught up with partying...alot of freshman do and then you get your first semester grade reports and find that youre barely passing. if you are going to party and drink, dont get out of control cause its a new place...you dont want to wake up passed out in some place that you dont recognize!

join a club or a sport so you can meet people faster.

find a cool coffee shop where you know you can go and study for hours.

be nice to your RA (i was an RA for 3 years so i know what its like to have shitty residents).

GO TO CLASS!!! its hard when you have morning classes but if you get a hang of it early, you'll be set for the next 4 years.

if you need any more advice, feel free to ask me! i just graduated from college and im gonna be starting grad school soon.

ps - what college are you going to?

Freshman year in college is a great year. In order to keep out of trouble, my advice to you is to get involved in on-campus activities. Depending on which college that you go to there is a wide variety of clubs and organizations. It doesn't hurt to go to parties and such, but just remember to be responsible. Best of luck.

Don't believe anybody else when they tell you how much or how little they study. Study as much as YOU need to in order to get good grades.

Read the assigned reading BEFORE the lecture so you have an overview of the material.

Most freshmen end up doing poorly their first semester because they think the hard part is over. University is much more difficult, and I'd recommend putting in more effort. However, partying is good, as long as you know your limits. Time management is key.

It's ok to party, but know your limits and don't get too caught up in it or your grades will suffer and you can get kicked out.
