I had my first prenatal visit today, they did urine & blood work. They also asked me tons of questions and gave me prenatal vitamins. They said because I wasn't on the pill and I was having regular periods that they can hold off on an ultrasound until 18 weeks. Is this normal??? Thanks for the info.

Yes. Through out all three of my pregnancies, I had my first ultrasound between 18 and 22 weeks. Don't worry. And just a little note about the prenatal vitamins, I got sick from them each time I was pregnant and found out the best time to take them was during my meal. Take a couple of bites of your food, then take your pills and finish your meal. I couldn't take them before I ate or after. It had to be in between my meal. Good luck and congrats.

Yeah. It's usually called your 20-week ultrasound, but they usually do it anywhere from 16-24 weeks. My first pregnancy I didn't have an ultrasound until my 20-week one. This is the only one that is determined to be medically necessary without any other complications. This pregnancy I wasn't sure how far along I was so they did an early ultrasound to determine my due date, then I got a 20 week ultrasound at about 23 weeks (there were some scheduling problems, so I got in late) to check for any problems. Most docs will only give you what's determined to be medically necessary because that's all the insurance companies will pay for.

A first trimester ultrasound is not always done. It will be done if you are unsure of your last menstrual period, if you are bleeding (or having other complications), if you have a history of ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages or if you are unhealthy in some other way. Otherwise, it is perfectly normal to wait until your baby is big enough to check out the organ system and growth rate.

Yes, it is normal. In fact, some women do not get their first ultrasound until 20 weeks.

Yes. They usually only do early ultrasounds when there is a question about the conception date., or if there is a suspicion of multiple babies.

When I was 18 weeks, I didn't even know what "sound" meant.

Maybe its just me.
