Squirrels are knocking unripe pecans off tree. Any suggustions besides shooting them? Also, can the unripe pecans that they have knocked down be salvaged? Will they ripen on thier own??

Some of the better garden centers and nurseries carry a device that you attach to the trunk of your tree so that animals cannot climb them. It's round and points downward, like having an umbrella wrapped around the tree trunk, that they cannot climb up and around. With some creativity you may be able to make one yourself. Just make sure it's sturdy and that they cant chew through it. Best of luck!!!

If you're opposed to shooting the squirrels then you need to get a live catch trap. You trap the squirrels and take them to a new neighbor hood then release them, but then all you are doing is putting your problem on someone else. You can't salvage pecans that have already been knocked down. No they won't ripen. Pecans only ripen after the first frost. The frost will cause them to ripen then open up, by then the pecans that have been knocked down will be rotten. By the way if you do get a live catch trap and catch the squirrels don't put your fingers inside the trap the cute little creatures will eat your pretty fingers off. I can guess you've never heard of fried squirrel or squirrel and dumplings but then most city folks haven't. Good luck with you squirrel problem.

Pecans still green in the shell, probably will not ripen. If the squirrels are knocking them down as they climb about the tree then the nuts may have fallen anyway. If they are being knocked out of the hulls, they may ripen. If the squirrels are cutting them still in the outside burs, then they are not falling but are being chewed off. Some pecans will begin to riped now. You can try to save them and see if they will finish drying out in the hulls. Squirrels "cut" or chew nuts from trees about this time of the year, right before you or I would think they would be ripe, but they love them. Other than shooting them, try a rubber snake on a limb, or an owl, or even you go out when you see them and run them away from the tree. Good exercise ;)

When I had a pecan tree, I eventually accepted the squirrels. What got me is that they would eat about a third of a ripe pecan, throw it to the ground and get another. Why couldn't they finish one?
