What does it take to be a thinker? I don't know the whole answer, but I can point to a few things. I think it helps to be naturally introspective, to be considered somewhat of an outsider - this allows you the psychological distance to be more contemplative of your surroundings. I think it helps to be a little bit hurt by the world, to have a touch of cynicism. Not that cynical thinking leads to interesting ideas necessarily, but it too also provides distance. Basically, it helps to be in a situation where you can objectify things around you. Take the mind for instance. Most people don't pay much attention to the mechanics of their own mind. It takes a certin kind of awareness to pay attention to your mind and how it operates.

Ultimately, it's having a gnawing feelng about the stated reasons for why the universe operates the way it does that can goad people on to become thinkers. Something just doesn't sit right. An explanation feels inadequate. It's been said that a little knowledge can be an inocculation against more learning. It's important to realize that having a sense of necessary doubt about a thing helps move you into a new understanding of something. Sometimes having doubt about even the most simple things we take for granted can lead to some amazing ideas. It's helpful to be skeptical, suspecious of the accepted answer.

Finally (as I stated at the beginning), it's important to realize that no knowledge is perfect and that it never will be perfect. There is no end, only the discovery of new worlds. Therefore, this explanation I'm providing can only, in the most feeble of ways, point you in the right direction. You must continue the path of essential doubt, necessary doubt and discover (or I should say continue to discover) the underlying truth of what makes people become thinkers.
