There r two options with u.
Either to use ur pic or use ur avatar. If u want to use ur avatar. Visit http://avatar.yahoo.com Make ur avatar there and save it. Or u bring the icon of avatar on ur yahoo toolbar. To do so cilck the pencil, select personal options, select add edit button and check the box of avatar and then click finished. It will bring the icon of avatar on ur yahoo toolbar which can be used by u anytime as per ur convenience.
Secondly, to use a pic, u need to hv 360 page. Visit http://360.yahoo.com to create ur 360 page and upload ur photo there. Make sure that u set ur photo to be primary photo which u want to use on yahoo answers. After doing these things, come back on ur yahoo answers profile. Here u click edit info and then click either the circle of using ur pic or the circle of using ur avatar. Now click the preview and save. It will solve ur problem.

To use your avatar on Yahoo! Answers, click "My Q&A" and then "Edit My Info". The Picture section allows you to choose between the grey smiley, your Yahoo! Avatar and your Yahoo! 360 picture. Click on the edit my yahoo!avatar and it opens a new page. choose what pleases you and then click "save changes" and then "add to favourites" . you will then be on your favourite avatars list. click on the picture u just created and refresh your profile page and your image will appear that. click save my profile info .
and done !

click messenger in yahoo box...click my display image- and either click on create your own avatar or if you already have one- click share my avatar...click ok- done

click on My Q&A (top right) of the Yahoo Answer page.
click "edit my info"
then select one

if you want to use one of your own pics, you have to start a 360 page and download the pic to it, then select it from 'edit my info' from your Q&A homepage
