Anybody know how I could get started promoting bands? Do I just start hooking bands I know of up with shows or what? Also is there any type of formal education for this profession? Just curious! Thanks!

if i were you i would check out local clubs and see what you can do to promote the smaller/local artists. the club would love the help (you might start out doing it on the free, but at least you're getting a start!) and smaller artists appreciate any kind of recognition. meanwhile, if you're going to college, major in mass communications or public relations or advertising. :) good luck! sounds like a fun job!

a simple way to promote bands is just wearing their merch, talking about them, and just supporting them.

start talking to local booking angencies, and see if you can help them.

i absolutely LOVE the local music scene in MA/NH. so i decided, to help promote the bands, i'd start a local magazine for them. (myspace.com/helltownzine). we do interviews with the bands, write-ups, reviews, everything. the bands seem to be really into it. the only problem we have is finding a decent place to get prints done.
