If your stones are calcium in construction, most likely it is genetic. I've experienced them for years. The best avenue to pursue is to start preventive measures.
Drink lots of water. Try for a minimum of 34 ounces, 64 would be better, per day.
They "say" cranberry juice helps to keep them down, or from forming. The high acid content, so I'm told, helps in this.
Only consume foods with easy to absorb calcium. Make sure you have the proper mix of calcium to magnesium so your body can utilize the minerals correctly.
Cut down on carbonated beverages. I've heard soft drinks encourage the formation of kidney stones.
Avoid caffeine, dehydrating yourself aids in the formation of kidney stones, so I'm told.
I have fallowed this strategy for several years. I have been able to keep the kidney stone problem down to a once a year to 2 years, problem.
I would also suggest you obtain help from your physician. Get some X-rays and perhaps an ultra-sound to determine hove many rocks have already formed. If there are some showing you may think about lithotripsy (the spelling may be wrong, it's a process to break them up so you can pass sand instead rocks, it's a lot easier).
Good luck on your problem.

Lemonade. Mix 1/2 cup lemon juice with 2 liters of water. Add only as much sweetener as it takes to make it taste ok. Drink 2 liters of it every day and you'll have enough water and citric acid to help prevent kidney stones.

i would work on prevention methods once he gets rid of these current stones. he definitely needs to stay more hydrated & urinate more often. u can tell if he's not well-hydrated if he either does not urinate often (like 2 times a day) or his urine color is a dark yellow (should be a light yellow). it could alo be something in his diet or maybe a side effect of medicines. example- mega doses of vitamin c can induce kidney stones. ask a doctor or pharmacist to help him evaluate his lifestyle.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Cut out ice cream & most dairy products. Also, cut back on tea drinking. The elements in these products lead to the stone's formation.
