If you take a look back in history to the majority of wars America has fought - lets say since 1900 -
America has established bases in every single defeated nation that we maintain and post troops in regularly.

For example,
Germany, Guantanamo Cuba, South Korea, Japan, Turkey, etc.

Even in Yugoslavia, American troops are still stationed there after America's Clinton Administration bombed the Serbs.
In fact, Yugoslavia offers American police officiers from the NYPD and LAPD especially, jobs as peacekeeps making around $100,000 a year (you just have to make it back to America alive).

Isn't it obvious America WILL NEVER LEAVE IRAQ?

The reason America should have never invaded Iraq was because Saddam Husseign kept the country united. Yes he did it through terror but at least, Iraq never saw the amount of violence it is seeing since we intervened.

Iraq has lost 130,000 people because of our war.

America can't leave because the violence will just escalate.

America should have never invaded Iraq. We should have simply killed the Taliban and based in Afghanistan. Alot of thse idiot neo cons talk crap about "oh maybe we should put Saddam back in power" - trying to be sarcastic, but the fact is, the US really screwed up in Iraq

Ideally, the US will not leave Iraq until the country is stable and the fighting has subsided. The role of US forces will change with the situation. However, if an anti-war Democrat (or Republican) takes the presidency and the anti-war crowd takes congress, then it is very possible that we will leave Iraq. Hopefully that doesn't happen and we stay the course.

As to the Germany/Japan comparison, it is very possible that we will have a base or two in Iraq like Ramstein AB in Germany, but that will be entirely up to the descretion of the Iraqi government, they could kick us out when they want.

I REALLY cannot agree with your statement about the Iraqis being happier under Saddam. Those that were happy were those that prospered. Either family or those jsut loyal to him. When he was displayed, the vast majority were happy! I should know, I was there.

What wasn't taken into account was what the British encountered when they were there at the beginning of the 20th century. The Iraqis are basically a tribal people. There are thousands of tribe and the links to them are stronger than any national tie. That is what is causing the strife. That and the fact that foreign insurgence are stirring up trouble as well.

I don't agree with the American military policy of shoot first, think later and I think that has made it worst for them.

At the end of the day, all people need to be free. All the Iraqis I spoke to said they would rather have this turmoil now and have a choice than live under a "freedom" decided for them by a dictator.

It's obvious to me that America won't leave Iraq until they can declare a victory.
There is a way however that they could leave without a victory in hand. They could simply have an international peacekeeping force take our place in Iraq. They could probably scrape up enough mercenary soldiers from around to world to replace us.
Then a lot of news about the war would die down, fall off the front pages, then they could probably claim a victory.

The first part of your assessment is correct; America will not leave Iraq in our lifetime; and probably well beyond. Just like in Germany and Japan - as well as the others you have pointed out. But let me ask you this; if Iraq turns out like German and Japan will you still be upset?

We had to nuke Japan to get them to submit and such a startling act put the country into submission so we didn't suffer like we do today in Iraq there; in Germany we simply carpet bombed the entire country - except for the half that Russia carpet bombed and after the carpet bombing we rolled tanks over the hole thing. So its not wonder they submitted.

See the correlation; we fight a politically correct war in Iraq and get beat up by a group of hard core zealouts that think we are soft....we should start leveling some cities and things will change quickly in our favor.

Can't get much worse, and in this case the Iraqi's were not our enemy, and they want us out.

They will never stand for a US base in Iraq that is permanent! They will throw us out first!

I think americans donot need to leave because when their would no alive soldier left what would you do with the corpse.
It would only increase the cost of coffins and transportaion. So let them burn in iraq forever.
