For definitions I utilice Wikipedia and Encarta. Those are a great resourse.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a method used to transfer or convey information on the World Wide Web. It is a patented open internet protocol whose original purpose was to provide a way to publish and receive HTML pages.

Usually an "static" simple web pages (the firsts ones) used only Http. Nowadays it is so much more complicated! Just for a simple page you need to know http, java scritp, ccss and xml!
Not to mention that Java, Asp and PHP are also required for better web pages and Flash too!
So a lot to learn. Hope Internet goes easier to program with better band width. Software virtualization like remote desktop but terminales are the future.

HTTP- hyper text transfer protocol- used for webpages, can have images, text, and media
RTSP- real time streaming protocol- streams audio/video to your computer
MMS- Microsoft Media Services- streams data to Windows Media Player
FTP- file transfer protocol- used to upload data to servers when making a webpage
UDP- User Datagram Protocol- don't really understand this one
RTP- Real-time Transport Protocol- delivers audio and video over the internet

These are only a few of the many protocols out there.
