A fax uses a phone line to transfer a picture or text to someone. The only use for it anymore is to send someone a file who doesnt have a computer but has a fax machine. It is pretty much obsolete now due to the fact that most people who use them now have computers and it is more efficient to send an e mail.

i before e, except after c, or when sounded like a, as in neighbor and weigh.
With that said, without a FAX machine, you can send and receive a FAX using a FAX modem. I have this. I simply compose the FAX, then "print" -- as the FAX capability is listed with printers.

Get a fax, hook it up. There should be a start button on it. When someone faxes you, the phone should ring. When you pick it up, you should hear a buzzing noise. Just go to your fax as quickly as you can and press start and pop there's the paper.

Hook the machine into the phone line, plug the cord into the electric socket in the wall, and watch it until paper came out, given of course somebody actaully faxs you.
