Well I dont like to look at the politics and to judge it by its president who has gotten me worried in the past (the most powerful man on the planet cant chew his food and chokes on a pretzel for gods sake, and managed to fall of a sedgeway - which is apparently nigh on impossible)
But every single american PERSON or family that I have ever met have been really friendly and very funny. I spent a couple of weeks out there earlier in the year and had an amazing time. Plus, you guys really do know how to build rollercoasters =)
I met an American who was over helping us with security (a BIG lad) was from somewhere down south and was on his first visit to london, cracked me up with his impression of him ending an english mugger for "not even having a gun". Im not sure it was a true story, but it sure was hilarious.
And a group of american senior citizens (which is a MUCH nicer way of saying it than OAP - have to agree with Jack Dee there) on the London Underground. One of the ladies was staring at me for ages, right into the side of my head and when I turned to look at her, she burst out laughing at the fact she had caught my eye contact on the tube =) I think her friends could have been playing the same game. I thought it was very funny.
So americans, thumbs up from me.

I had some preconceived ideas about americans, due to the company I used to wokr for. They were brash, arrogant, and not too bright. Then I moved to the US to work and found the average person the complete opposite to my original thoughts. A high percentage are very friendly and helpful. Although, everything they are taught is very insular and they really don't know much about the world outside the US. I have found the people do change from one part of the country to another. The southern States the people are so cool and laid back, they enjoy life. But, the people in the northen states seem very cold and very selfish.

Hate generalities, prefer to deal with individuals.
But you asked, for most Brits the only way to form an opinion of Americans is through the media.
Unfortunately this is where the problem lies, we can separate the people from the President, but we cannot understand why the people voted for the President a second time round.
As an aside, the few Americans I have met have been sound, but they are ones that actually escaped!

You are great people, my fiancee is American, I'm Scottish. however, you do on the whole have a very blinkered and ignorant view of other countries cultures. Your media and education systems are equaly to blame for this. It's not your fault, your hearts are in the right place, and if it wasnt for you Americans, here in the UK we would all be speaking in German right now. As for Mr Bush, He's a good president doing a good job, you lot always seem to whine about every president you ever have. You can never please all of the people all of the time. Please try to grasp the fact that Mr Bush is trying to fight evil wherever he finds it. We should all aspire to that and back him all the way. He is perhaps the most pro-active and brave leader of our time. When world peace is finally achieved in the not too far future you will remember his name.

Well your president is your "shop window" so that says a lot... I've grown up in England with ideas of American stereotypes, from the news and TV... but i can honestly say, recently I've found an American to get close to, and surprisingly she has a great heart and thinks just like I do...
so my opinion is mellowing LOL

the average american I meet in the street varies between a friendly new yorker, a cool californian and a rather backward mid westerner...just like british people vary so do americans. i think most americans that I meet are not proud of dubbya and the damage he is doing to the world....

Great!, but unfortunately you're being plagued by the immigrant problem at the moment, same as us. Personally I regard any President with respect and believe that he (sorry, can't say, or she, as there's not been one) is inseparable from your nation

Well they have their faults but we DO have quite a lot in common with them? Lets not alienate them any further. Everybody needs allies at at time like this. Don't you know there''s a war on?
