It is a career, and a very hard one to get in at that. Considering how big modeling is it has to be a career

No. Modeling is a form of self abuse and should be reported as soon as you find out that someone you know is considering it as a career move. The reason I say this is because it involves self reflection that is only overcome by years of drug abuse, self indulgence and low self esteem which comes from looking at your self in magazines and photographs excessively.
If you succeed in modeling and make a lot of money, you only spend it on beating up the people around you by throwing things at them because they aren't as beautiful as you are.
Consider trying to sleep with a man who is as gorgeous as yourself. He's a model, too. He looks at himself day and night and can't pass a mirror without tossing his hair. How do you compete with that?
Say the two of you marry and have model children and they begin to model? How do you have time to take them to their modeling gigs while you're out tromping around the world on modeling gigs of your own? Or, were you going to have the nanny do all that for you?
Go to school. Use your brain. Use your body for pleasure. Don't whore yourself out. There are enough people out there exploiting themselves like that. There are not enough people out there trying to do some good in this world, trying to make a difference, trying to make something good happen. Do that instead.

I already do, the best advice I can give you is to get a photo portfolio done and submit your photos to as many places as you can, the internet has made it easier nowadays because you can just download photos and all your contact info and what modeling you like to do, whether it be print work, fashion/runway or even adult. Check out the links below.

Why wouldn't it be?
Modelling is a source of income which can be relied upon as a single source of income. Furthermore, the term professional is defined as of or relating to a profession. Obviously, a profession is a career.
