In September, I will be in my third year of university, majoring in Sociology. I was just wondering where to go from there if I want to become a social worker.

Once you get your bachelor's in Sociology, go to a graduate school of Social Work, and you'll spend a couple of years before you get your Masters in Social Work and then you'll be a licensed or certified Social Worker. I've been there and done that. God Bless you.

If you wanna get the experience I suggest you work at a hospital, school, or a government's office like your local county's Welfare Office or Social Security Administration. Go ahead and apply for a job there or call those places to find out if you can practice your career of choice while you are still in school. Chances are you may be able to do that. Do some research on that. Good luck!

With all due respect, I don't think this career would be of genuine help to people, as it is mostly centered around liberalism and it's a cousin to psychology, who's present-day "professionals" are only qualified to help one another.

Even though you could make money at it technically, I couldn't recommend it. Consider starting your own honest business if possible - you'll be better off, especially in the long run.

I was always under the impression (given to me by a social worker), that you needed a BA in any field, and your MA in social work. Good luck.

Take few more courses in psychology towards your field of interest. They do have courses that do have something to do with counseling. Also, in order to get experiences, the school does help you through internship. You should talk to your advisor more about your interest he'she will poimt you to the right direction. Good enough, yes?

A soc degree is about all you need...actually, any degree works. Get practicum working at your local CPS during the last two years. It helps get a foot in the door. As far as the person above me who said you'll just get burnt out, not if you love what you do. I love working with families.

Apply to a MSW program during your final semester. Also consider attending a combined MSW/Nursing program. That would be a highly marketable credential.

Apparently, you need a condescending attitude, and the sadistic desire to harm people in the name of helping them.
