Art gives kids free reign to express themselves creatively and gives them exposures to different ideas. It helps them to use parts of the brain that don't get much "exercise" in other classes. I do think that a less creative populace is a more servile populace--as a button of mine says, "Artists make lousy slaves." But really, I think the more kids' creativity is repressed by banning art, recess, unnaturally colored hair, etc., the more rebellion will be fostered, and the more anger these kids will have stored up. I think we'll be seeing more Columbines at the rate we're going.

Removing arts from education will result in lower math scores from those students. It's been proven in multiple studies that music and art both affect a child's ability to do well in math. With math scores of American children already below those of other major Asian and European countries this will be very detrimental. How will political leaders gain from this? I really don't know since these young people are America's future leaders, and those in political office will be counting on our future leaders when they are old and in need of government assistance. It's akin to shooting yourself in the foot. Or maybe they just don't care as long as they are getting those should-be education dollars to line their pockets now.
To make up for losing arts education, parents should do everything within their power to get this education for their children outside of the school system.

we have that problem in NYC. theirs is no music, art or plays in school anymore. when i was in school we had all that. now they train the kids to pass these stupid test to make sure their is no social promotion. we need a huge change in the education system. the kids are being taught to pass test and not to use their minds for free thinking. we need an educational overhaul for the whole country we are way behind the rest of the world in education. we promote the immigration of intellectuals to make up for the brain drain in this country. it's a shame.

It won't.
People who truly want an art education will search out the private sector and get an excellent education at a reasonable fee.
Government subsidized education is a loser. Johnny can't read but he feels good about it!

Pallas Athena - what a great handle. Even now most Americans would have no idea who she was (she is). With the way your education system is going none will know. Even worse is that some think that doesn't matter.

Bush's No Child Left Behind Act is a total lie. all it says is students will sit and do nothing but take tests. i am fortunate to be able to go to a school where we still have the arts and i send my condolences to thosethat dont. it says there will be no child left behind but i see lots of kids getting lost in piles of computer graded tests that do absolutely nothing for the student.

Yes. We need to teach them to think outside of the box and art is a great way of doing that.

less people will have education, so those who actually want to be and artist will work on that separately, which means there will be less jobs in that region, so more jobs will open up with the deficiency of people able to do them. But yea, it is dumming the already dumb america
