This is hard to achieve. In reality, it's to not get taken too badly.
The best way is to first pick the make of car/ model you want so you eliminate the apples and oranges in car buying. Then find out what cost range is out there in your area, (look at www.cars.com)
If you can find what you want from an indivdual, not a dealer, you may have real bargain power to save money.
If you don't absolutely love the car, don't buy it.
You don't want to settle and wish for what you may have had. Get Lookin' and Good Luck!

i guest this is for a use car.
First your will not get scew at the dealer on the car but you will get screw on the price. they will jack the price up for all their work.
Buy from an indiv. great price but take it to a mechanic shop to get it check-out before you buy the car, some will do it for free or very little it does not take long.
You cant do some simple check before you bring it to the mechanic.
Check the RPM at idle, it should stay still no up and down not even a little, most car at idle is less than 1000rpm different for every car.
Smell the exshaust when the car is running(no you are not going to die just a little short period of time) put your nose about 16 inches away from the exshaust you should smell nothing or very little, if you get a strong smell the car is running rich, that is not good.

Find what you want and how much you are willing to spend(Don't let your payments control whether you can afford other things, like food), and then go to the mattresses. Just kidding. Seriously when confronted by the dealer DO NOT let them talk #'s first. Do not Awnser questions like where do you want your payments.
Because what they are doing is labeling you. They are trying to pick out the cheapest car to stick you with at those payments.
Don't be in a hurry THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER CAR. Trust me there are thousands of Mustangs, Civics, or Whatever's out there and there is always another deal out there. Don't jump on the first one. I mean common you are going to be stuck with this payment for the next 3 to 5 years so take your time.
Try to find someone who you can trust to come with you. But chose carefully. You want some one who will quietly give you his/her input, and not push you. Good luck!!!

if you find a car you really like take it to a garage ,and have them check it for you,,it will also help to take someone with you that knows a little bit about cars,,but ,,like i said if you find one ,,tell the dealer that you want to have it checked out really good,,if he acts like he don't want you to do that ,,then i would look at a different car lot,,if you find a good car,,and the dealer knows its a good car,,he wont mind you taking it to a garage and having it checked out really good,,this is a real good way to keep from getting took on a car,,also look for signs of new paint,,this might indicate that it has been wrecked,,and fixed back,,there area many ways a dealer can take advantage of you,,it is up to you to do everything you can to prevent it from happening,,it also helps not to get in a hurry,,just because you find a car you like ,,don't mean that it is the only car out there like that,,there are plenty of them,,and right now its a buyers market,,dealers want to sell them, not keep them,,just be care full ,,and good luck,,i hope this help,s.

Simple:
1) Know what you're going to purchase (do your homework)
2) Don't let the salesperson command the deal (you're the one with the money)
3) READ, READ, READ the contracts and ask questions (make them EARN your money)
4) Don't be afraid to get up and leave the dealership (if you have to give them your drivers license for a test drive get it back ASAP)

I'm in the same situation and I'm taking the advice of friends and co-workers. They suggested going through a dealership first cause you'll get something under warranty and better customer service. If you can't get one there try craig's list, auto.com, etc. Look in your local auto trader. Check out the local bank foreclosure and government siezure auctions.
