.... put a paper that says "SLOW" on the pole of a yield sign?

Cars are always speed down my street. Lots of kids have almost been hit, can I put a sign that says "SLOW" on the pole part of the 'yield' sign at the corner of the cul-de-sac?? Is it illegal?

What you need to do is have a stop sign or speed bumps installed on your street. Go to your community's monthly Counsel meeting and state your concern. It would help if you brought alot of people with you to back you up with your request.

In the meantime, figure out what times of day are the worst and then ask the police to hide somewhere during those times to catch and ticket the speeders. Word will get around.

Of course it is not legal for private citizens to put up their own street signs. The rule you are trying to impose may be unenforceable. It would be best to go through the proper channels at your city hall, & have the sign you want put up by the city. With an official sign in place, you can ask for extra police patrols on your street if drivers are routinely disobeying the signs.

I wouldn't - there's a lot of legal liability there. Contact your road authority and explain the situation and ask them to put up a sign or get the police to patrol speed there.

You could go to your city council and ask for a children playing sign. Or see if you can get the speed limit reduced. Or ask a cop to sit there with a radar gun.

Yes that is illegal, and you will be fined, altering a street sign is just as bad as defacing it with graffiti or pulling it out altogether. Leave it alone and call your local police department with your complaints.

As written, you question is nearly impossible to answer. This is a matter of state or even local law. There maybe be dozens, or even hundreds of ways to answer this question depending on where you live. Anybody who claims to have a yes or no answer without knowing where you live is only speculating.

It does not sound legal to me. It is distracting and could cause more harm than good.
