First take 1-2 benadryl (generic = diphenhydramine). Then keep the rash as cool as possible. Soaking in a cool bath with Aveeno Oatmeal bath (Walmart has a generic version) will soothe the skin. Stay in until it is too cold. Then put calamine on the rash. And try to fall asleep and forget the rash. I found this to be the best way to get over the rash as fast as possible. If it is over a large part of your body or affecting your eyes or breathing you need to get to a doctor right away.
I learned the hard way that you can get temporary relief with very hot water - but then it causes a rebound affect and makes the rash much much worse! Actually, I'm a slow learner and did this with 2 different outbreaks... and when I tried the cool bath and keeping my skin cool I was surprised at how mild the reaction could be.

Get a product called Tecnu.

It's a clear lotion specifically for poison ivy.

It's great, you can get it at any pharmacy.

I have got the very best way to both make it clear up, as well as go away faster. You should use lye soap. It is a miracle cure and nothing will work as well.

To immediatly make it stop itching, use some lanacaine.
