That depends on several factors, for example, local and state law, your eligibility for the program, type of Section 8 (project based vs. tenant based), etc.

I can only speak for the project based program. HUD requires that the remaining household member be of legal contract age under state law and the individual must be a party to the lease when the family member leaves the unit.

There are additional rules for Section 202 and 811 properties.

Section 8 is supposed to be re evaluated each year based on salary and per capita income in your local economy.
