My fifth grader is interested in playing the flute in our school band. What is the best kind of flute for her to start out with. Something with good quality but not too expensive either. I want to make sure she sticks with it first if you know what I mean.

Gemeinhardt makes the best student flutes. (They make great higher-end flutes too but that's probably not what you want). Model 2SP is probably best.

You can get it in nickel plate or silver plate. Silver is probably better quality.

i would really suggest you rent one through the school or through an insturment store in your area. i know it might not be the best flute ever, but that way if she decides to stop you just return it at the end of the school year. insturments can get pricey so i would only invest in a good one when she starts getting serious. i didn't get my own viola until i made the higher level orchestra at my school. :) good luck!
