Hazing is a rich man's version of being "jumped in" into a poor man's "gang." It is all about how much power those in charge are GIVEN by those who want to associate with those in charge. It is meaningless embarrassment at the least and has led to death at the most extreme (or totally stupid, "we didn't think it would kill him..sob sob sob..."). The most ridiculous death I think I ever heard was (instead of alcoholic drinking games - which everyone knows can cause death by alcohol poisoning), recently a fraternity was brought up on charges because they had WATER drinking games and the pledge actually died of WATER INTOXICATION (too much water for his body to process actually killed him). Mind you, we're talking about 3 gallon jugs in plural, nearly naked bodies, cold basement temperatures, and HOURS of abuse. That is hazing. A fraternity or sorority that puts its pledges to such abuse is controlled by a bully and has nothing but other bullies and serious wannabees as members. Anyone wanting to join is either driven by an abusive past or has such a low regard of themselves to ALLOW anyone to treat them like that. FOR THE PRIVILEDGE OF SUCH ABUSE, A MERE $200-$1,000 per QUARTER is charged (depending upon the perceived level of socially elite status).

Supposedly, a fraternity or sorority is all about making the right social connections and setting up a professional network so that as a graduate you "have connections," but according to one frat friend of mine, "Frats are for amazing weekend kegger parties and the sororities provide our b_ _ _ _ _ es." Go in with eyes wide open - or better yet, leave it to the masochists and don't join.

Hazing i always recieved was the group would blindfold you then beat you with sticks and then leave you somewhere. My sorority defines hazing as making anyone feel uncomfortable. My sorority cannot make its pledges (though that term is supposedly hazing in itself, but that's another debate) do anything other than attend the education class. We cannot force them to, or make them feel forced, to do anything else. For some Greek groups this also includes such things as getting someone a drink from the kitchen (even non-alcoholic) even if they were headed that way.
