I am a new grower and seems everything on the net is about growing monster pumpkins. I just want some basics for my little plot and need to be able to prune and don't want to cut the wrong vine.

Here is what I did to grow monster pumpkins. I fed them milk (just poured into the ground). I also pruned them back to runners about 6 feet long and only left 2 pumpkins per plant. I never worried about Tertiary runners since I didn't know what they were :)
I also used fresh horse manure about 5' from the base of the plant in a circle around in...with a heavy straw mulch...I watered deeply daily. I used no chemical fertilizers and no chemical bug sprays. I gave it fish and kelp emulsion once a week and used baking soda and dish soap for any buggy things.
Voila we had 4 pumpkins well over 100# each!!!
Good luck!

cut the suckers off the main vine, once you have some pumpkins growing, do not let more grow, pluck them off.

good luck.
