Basically when animal is in heat, it's just like when a woman get's turned on, or sexually aroused or over stimulated.

It's pretty much your female animal's period, or menstrual cycle. Dogs don't ovulate as much as humans, so they only go into heat a few times a year. She will have bloody discharge (like a human, cloth diapers with holes cut out for the tail and an elastic waistband work very well to control this, there are also commercial products available thru pet stores, etc.)
It also means she can get pregnant.

THERE READY TO HAVE SEX AND WHEN THEY ARE IN HEAT THEY CAN GET PREGGO AND HAVE BABIES AFTER THEY ARE OUT OF HEAT GET THEM FIXED to many puppies and kittens are not good for a cat or dog or any animal really

its the animal equivalent of a period. The female become physically ready for breeding. Dogs and cats and other animals do this.
