Some favorites of my parents and grandparents are Bill Monroe (bluegrass music) and folk music with what I call "mountain instruments" (dulcimer, banjo, harmonica, autoharp, etc.) My favorite place for such music is Song of the Wood in Black Mountain, NC. (www.songofthewood.com) At least in my area of the country, these are the kinds of music most older people heard as children. Not necessarily "international", but many of these songs have roots in multicultural or international music.

Try Steve Suffet's CD "Now the Wheel Has Turned" - he's an older guy - maybe like your grandfather but probably not that old - and his folk CD is awesome. You can find out more at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/stevesuffet
