The American people need a scapegoat for their problems. Unfortunately, this racism and negativity toward Muslims is what the current administration wants. If you keep the populace in a constant state of fear, and make them think that they enemy is in their midst, they will basically believe and do anything they're told to do.
It's also in favor of the administration, as it diverts the people's attention from other issues of great importance (social issues such as welfare, social security, health insurance, etc).

If you really wanted to try and educate the people as to what the majority of Muslims are like however, you would need to transform every major media corporation, which (and I'm not paranoid), is run by many groups connected to the state of Israel. Israel doesn't like a good rep for Muslims, because they want us to believe they're waging a holy war against them in the ME.

So I'd say just give it time. Before it was blacks, next it'll be the Chinese, or Russians, or whomever we claim (or falsely claim), harmed us.

Religious leaders of these countries should publicly and privately denounce terrorism and make the terrorists renounce violence so that people can live in peace and friendship.Mere educating will not do but should be followed by actual practice
