so they say that there is this chemical that you can put in the pool , so that if a person pees in the water, a discoloration, or ring of color forms to signify the urine's presence. is this true? ( i don't pee in pools, just asking for one's sane of mind) if so, give me a link of the site that sells the stuff. i say it's bogus, but my two friends say its true. but have nothing to back it up with. so help me settle the score.

Urban Myth. I've worked as a supervisor a pool for a few summers and there is no such chemical. We do tell the kids there is a chemical so we can cut down on them peeing in the pool. If people really knew how dirty public pools were they would probably not swim in them. Word for the wise.....if the water is cloudy....don't get in....LOL!

Yes this is true. I have a very good friend who owns a pool maintenance company and does provide a chemical to customers who want to detect the presence of urine in the water. I think he may have some information in regards to the particulars of the chemical @ www.poolsolutions.com

There is no such thing just continue to dip those strips in your pool and add the chemicals. I don't let people other that family swim and I make them go to the restroom. You can make it fun get them out with a snack chips and dip won't make them pee. Get them out by telling them you have to check the PH make them go at this time. Do this about every 90 minutes. I am not swimming in pee.

Urban legend

As one old-time Boston-area poolman put it, "If such chemicals did exist, every municipal pool in Boston would be bright purple."

It is partially perpetuated by the availability of bogus pool side signs claiming it is in use.
