The "black" part of puerto rican heritage comes from the slave trade, at each stop along the way from Africa to the us, more and more slaves would get off, whis is why the farther along the lesser antilles you go (towards the us I mean), the darker the isalnders are (in general). I think it's funny to that most puerto ricans are really racist towards black people. My Grandpa was a dark skinned Rican, and I thought he was black when I was little, but he was really racist. I also know people there that treat their kids differently if they have lighter or darker skin.

Because many Puerto Ricans have black blood in them.
Puerto Rico is a jambalaya of culture. The Spaniards brought over many slaves to Puerto Rico and that is why there is a lot of black blood in their people. As well as a strong African culture, which produced a unique music and a unique religion, Santeria.

I had an Ecuadoran friend and a Venezuelan friend and they both told me that South and Central Americans widely consider the Puerto Rican the N***** of the spanish speaking world. Maybe that is where the confusion comes from. I don't know I'm just repeating what they said to me.

Just because they look like African Americans. I'm Dominican, but I look black, its not that big of a deal when someone calls me Black. It's a good thing, I can interchange races for scholarship purposes.

Some people have been raised with the idea that anyone that isn't snow white, is black. Numerous stereotypes exit within their local culture that reinforce these beliefs. Naturally, it's easier to run with the pack, than to think for oneself. Also, this allows them to continue a subtle form of racism without admitting to themselves that that is their motivation.

Puerto Ricans have Black Ancestors. While ethnically they are Puerto Rican, racially the majority are Black or multiracial with Black. It is interesting that so many people are in denial about who they are.
