Personally, I love Star Trek and I don't understand why when I admit that fact, I receive scorn as if I'm some reject who fancies odd things and has a low social standing.

I think they are simply attacking that which they secretly fear. They can't understand the show, so they ridicule others to compensate.

Because two of the reasons a lot of the people who like Star Trek like Star Trek are because they are interested in science (and the future) and/or because they are interested in the kinds of intellectual and social issues that Star Trek is known for raising. In other words, Star Trek fans are more likely than the average TV fan to be interested in using their brains. And in this culture many people have a stereotype that people who like using their brains and thinking are "nerds" as well as a stereotype that "nerds" don't have social skills.

You are absolutely right! I guess that Star Trek is not some stupid soap opera. Star Trek is sometimes hard to understand and you have to be quite smart to find the point because many stories from the Star Trek are stories that we can find in the everyday `s life. And also people who like Star Trek are illusionist and interested in science and things that are beyond every days things. Trekkers like to think how world will look like in the next centuries. Those are reasons I like Star Trek!

IMHO, I think the American political agenda identifies our country more closely with the Klingon Empire than with the Federations. Too many people consider peace as a sign of weakness -- inferior complex perhaps...

There was a special, I can't remember if it was on Bravo or
TLC, called 'The Universe According to William Shatner' -
If anyone saw that, they would be amazed of how today's
gadgets resulted from that show.

I'm not sure. Nobody considers football fans inferior. Most Trekkies like football as well.
